Often when consumers think about stone surfaces, they automatically think of quartz or granite partly because they love the look but often because they’re not sure what else is out there. Today we’re sharing some of our knowledge on other stones you might want to consider for your next renovation project. These stones are diamonds in the rough so to speak, and are making a big splash in interior design this year.
Porcelain
What is it?
Porcelain is a sleek, modern, man-made stone that is available in larger slabs and a wide selection of colours and patterns. We love porcelain because it is durable, easy to clean and doesn’t require sealing. Porcelain is made by forming kaolinite-heavy material into glazed slabs or tiles. The glazing pigment added during fabrication produces an appearance similar to the veining found in marble or granite. Porcelain is very thin so extra steps are often required with transportation, fabrication, and installation.
Where to use it?
Porcelain is most often used on wall surfaces. Whether to create a show-stopping
fireplace surround, a spectacular backsplash or a gorgeous accent wall. But porcelain can be much more than the stone adorning our walls. Recently it has seen an increase of use for countertops and outdoor kitchens.
Onyx
What is it?
Onyx is a stunning translucent stone that creates drama when underlit or backlit. A calcareous stone, onyx is formed when dissolved limestone redeposits and forms new stone. It is a soft stone, which is why most onyx slabs are supported with a mesh backing. Typically, onyx is sealed when used as a countertop.
Where to use it?
The translucent nature of Onyx has recently attracted the attention of designers and tradesmen alike. They are creating dramatic focal points with back-lit Onyx fireplaces, wet bars and outdoor features. We are even seeing onyx being used in furniture pieces such as coffee tables, light fixtures and other decorative accents. While Onyx can be used anywhere, it is a porous, soft stone that scratches easily so it should be used on low-traffic areas.
Soapstone
What is it?
Soapstone is a naturally occurring material typically sourced from the Appalachian mountain range, Brazil and Finland. Soapstone is a beautiful organic-looking stone that is soft to the touch and has a lovely sheen when rubbed with mineral oil. We love it because it absorbs heat and has a beautiful patina as it ages.
Where to use it?
Soapstone is used on countertops and other surfaces in the home. It is a great choice for customers who appreciate the perfectly imperfect and embrace the evolving nature of the stone’s patina. Soapstone can show surface scratches when used for countertops, however, mineral oil will help diminish the look of scratches and Soapstone countertops can be refinished. We’re seeing it used to accentuate the look of a modern farmhouse kitchen or to ground an ultra modern space with an organic element.
On your next project don’t be afraid to check out the other stones available for the surfaces in your home. Porcelain, Onyx and Soapstone are excellent choices and will give your home a unique look that is different than the norm.
