2020 brought us a lot of change and uncertainty. With many of us working from home, our homes became more than just a roof over our heads, they became our safe havens, our all-inclusive vacations, daycares, and workspaces. This change in mindset also made us stop and look at how our homes function and how they make us feel. We realized what works, what
doesn’t and this impact can be felt in the 5 kitchen trends to expect in 2021 below:
1. Eco-Sustainability
Eco-Sustainability is not just a buzz word or a fleeting trend. Eco-sustainability is the new classic that is here to stay. More and more consumers are looking for ways to reuse old building materials or incorporate more eco-friendly materials into their renovations. Eco-friendly renovated kitchens in 2021 will include; quartz or Corian countertops as they are the most sustainable and don’t require sealant, reclaimed or reused cabinets, low to no VOC finishes, and energy-efficient lighting and appliances.
2. Arches and Curves
Arches and curves provide a sense of warmth and comfort in any space and we’re seeing this
warmth seep into our kitchens in 2021. We’re talking cylindrical islands and large oversized arched range hoods. Try it with a neutral palette to have it blend with the space or with deeply veined marble for dramatic contrast.
3. Kitchen Blurred Lines
The lines between kitchen and living space will continue to blur in 2021. Kitchens and living rooms will no longer be defined by distinct walls and structures but will be zoned by how we use the space, whether that be a coffee bar in the living room or hidden office ladder in the kitchen we will want our homes set up for how we live now and in the future.
4. Oversized Lighting
While oversized lighting has been around for many years now, in 2021 we will see this trend continue with oversized pleated cone pendants and pill-shaped island drum shades. Lighting will become focal points in and of themselves. Updating the lighting in your kitchen can be done over the weekend yet the change can feel like a mini kitchen makeover.
5. Smart Kitchens
Our kitchens will continue to get smarter in 2021 from smaller appliances like an Alexa activated microwaves to larger appliances like camera-enabled fridges that let you look inside to see what you’re running low on when you’re grocery shopping or in smaller gadgets like app-controlled meat thermometers. Whether you’re a gourmet chef or use your oven as storage, these smart features will help your kitchen function better for you and how you live. Whatever 2021 brings I think it’s safe to say we’re all excited to be done with 2020. Not only will 2021 bring a year of renewal but it will also serve up some wonderful new kitchen trends so buckle-up, it’s onward and upwards.
